CalRHA Press Statement on Prop. 33 Defeat
CALIFORNIA RENTAL HOUSING ASSOCIATION ISSUES STATEMENT ON SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN AGAINST PROPOSITION 33
The statewide housing association opposed the extreme rent control measure
which would have devastated the state’s rental housing market.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Rental Housing Association (CalRHA) has issued a statement following the voters’ rejection of Proposition 33. The proposition, which would have resulted in an unprecedented expansion of rent control, failed to pass on election day.
“California voters demonstrated that they want a real solution to our affordable housing crisis by soundly rejecting Proposition 33’s ill-conceived rent control initiative,” stated Earle Vaughan, President, CalRHA. “We have seen similar restrictions passed in other states, where they have had detrimental effects on the housing market. In New York, for example, severe rent control legislation has depressed new construction and resulted in more dilapidation of rental housing units. I am encouraged that Californians recognize the dangers of universal rent control.”
Prop. 33 was the third failed attempt in six years to institute restrictions on the housing market, with similar measures failing to pass in 2018 and 2020.
“Prop 33 was a nonsensical measure that threatened the critical revenue property owners rely on to maintain, upgrade, or build new rental properties. The measure would have worsened the housing crisis by stripping property owners of their rights and further limiting the supply of the already strained affordable housing market,” added Vaughan.
“CalRHA and our affiliates will continue to advocate for effective housing solutions that can have real, positive impacts on the rental housing market.
